Contemplation, Beschauung, näher das von den Schranken der Endlichkeit mehr oder minder befreite Schauen Gottes und der göttlichen Wahrheiten; contemplatives, beschauliches Leben ist nach Görres »ein Schauen und Erkennen unter Vermittlung eines höheren Lichts und ein Wirken und Thun unter Vermittlung einer höheren Freiheit«, die höchste Stufe und Frucht der mit Ascese (s. d. Art.) verbundenen Meditation. Die C. als dauernder Lebenszustand steigert sich zu vorübergehenden Verzückungen, Ecstasen, zur Anticipation der Seligkeit und offenbarte sich im Leben der größten Heiligen aller Zeiten, besonders des 16. Jahrhdts., z.B. der hl. Theresia, des Philipp von Neri u. A., vergl. Mystik.
