Capo d'Istria, Hauptstadt des Kreises Istrien, der zu dem österr. Kronlande Illyrien gehört, auf einer Felseninsel, die durch eine lange Brücke mit dem Festlande verbunden ist, Sitz einer Bezirkshauptmannschaft, eines Bezirksgerichts, einer Salinendirection, des Domcapitels für das Bisthum Triest, hat 6700 E., einen Hafen, Fischerei, Küstenfahrt. Wein und Oelbau, Leder- und Seifenfabrikation. Wegen ihrer Lage hat die Stadt Mangel an Trinkwasser, das durch eine Wasserleitung herbeigeschafft wird; in der Nähe der Stadt bedeutende Baisalzschlämmerei.
