Orang-Utang

Orang-Utang, d.h. Waldmensch (Pithecus, nach andern Simia), Gattung Affen der alten Welt, mit vorspringenden Knochenleisten am Schädel, sehr langen Armen, ohne Schwanz, ohne Backentaschen, am Daumen der Hinterhand ohne Nagel. Der eigentliche O. (P. satyrus), mit Stirne, kleinen Ohren, zeigt manche äußerliche Aehnlichkeit mit dem Menschen; die Arme bei aufrechter Stellung den Boden berührend, der Körper mit grobem rostfarbenem Haare bedeckt, die sehr beweglichen u. ausdehnbaren Lippen ohne deutliche Lippenränder; wird ausgewachsen gegen 5' hoch u. lebt in kleinen Truppen im Innern von Borneo, Cochinchina u. Malakka; er ist sehr gelehrig u. abrichtbar, bleibt aber in Allem Thier. – Zur gleichen Gattung zählen einige auch den Schimpanse (P. troglodytes), dem vorigen ähnlich und von gleicher Größe, aber ohne Stirn, mit großen Ohren u. kürzern Armen; Haar schwarz oder braun, heerdenweise in Guinea und Congo, ebenfalls sehr gelehrig.
