Main

Main, schiffbarer Nebenfluß des Rheins, aus 2 Quellflüssen, dem rothen u. weißen M.e gebildet, die im bayer. Oberfranken entspringen u. sich bei Steinhausen vereinigen. Durch den Einfluß der Rodach wird der M. schiffbar u. mündet nach einem vielfach gewundenen Laufe von 60 Ml. Mainz gegenüber in den Rhein. Seit 1842 wird er mit Dampfschiffen befahren u. steht durch den Ludwigskanal (s.d.) mit der Donau in Verbindung.
