Ferrara, Delegation (49 QM. mit 220000 E.) im Kirchenstaate mit der gleichnamigen Hauptst. an einem Arme des Po mit Citadelle, in welcher, wie in der Stadt, Oesterreich das Besatzungsrecht hat, zählt 30000 E, ist Sitz eines Erzbischofs, eines Legaten, hat eine Universität, Seidenfabriken (die Häuser Ariostos, Guarinis, im St. Annenhospital Torquato Tassos Gefängniß); in den Kirchen schöne Gemälde. – Im Mittelalter hatte F. ghibellinische Fürsten deutscher Abkunft, kam nach den Hohenstaufen an das Haus Este unter päpstlicher Oberlehensherrlichkeit. Damals war F.s Glanzperiode, von welcher noch die vielen Paläste und Kirchen Zeugniß geben; 1598 zog es Clemens VIII. als erledigtes Lehen ein. Seit dieser Zeit theilte es die Schicksale des Kirchenstaates.
