Reproduction

Reproduction, in der Physiologie der im lebenden Organismus beständig vor sich gehende Stoffwechsel, wobei die durch das Leben verbrauchten und ausgeschiedenen Stoffe vermittelst Athmung, Verdauung u. Assimilation stets durch neue ersetzt werden. Ferner das Vermögen, verloren gegangene Gebilde und Theile des Körpers ganz od. theilweise wieder zu erzeugen (Regenerationsproceß), am ausgedehntesten bei niedrigern Thieren z.B. Polypen, Würmern, bei dem Salamander, der Eidechse etc. Viel geringer ist dasselbe bei den höhern Thieren; beim Menschen beschränkt es sich auf die Wiedererzeugung hauptsächlich solcher Gebilde, welche durch Ablagerung aus den unterliegenden Gefäßen entstehen, so der Oberhaut, des Epitheliums, der Nägel, Haare, Schleimhäute des Zellgewebes, der Knochen etc.
