Guiana, Guyana, das Küstenland Südamerikas zwischen dem Orinoco u. Amazonenstrom, 60000 QM. groß, erhebt sich von der Küste langsam zu einem Hochlande, das von 7 parallelen Ketten durchzogen ist. Dasselbe ist während der trockenen Jahreszeit dürr und wüst, wird aber in der Regenzeit von üppiger Vegetation bedeckt; das Küstenland ist sumpfig, waldig, ungesund, hat tropische Wärme u. Produktenreichthum. Es wurde 1504 von den Spaniern entdeckt, aber nur an wenigen Punkten colonisirt, so daß sich Franzosen, Engländer, Holländer und im Süden Portugiesen festsetzten. Der nördl. ehemals span. Theil gehört jetzt Venezuela (s. d. und Angostura), der südl. zu Brasilien; den mittleren haben die Engländer (s. Berbice, Demerara, Essequibo), die Holländer (s. Surinam) und Franzosen (s. Cayenne) behauptet.
