North

North (Nahrs), Frederik, Lord, Graf von Guilford, geb. 1733, wurde 1767 leitender Minister Großbritanniens, folgte den Ansichten des Königs in der Behandlung der Colonien, setzte im Parlamente die Maßregeln gegen Nordamerika durch, welche zum Bruche führten u. die Aussöhnung unmöglich machten u. mußte nach der Capitulation des Lord Cornwallis 1782 seinen Abschied nehmen. Früher Hochtory ließ er sich mit den Whigs ein u. bildete mit Fox 1783 das Coalitionsministerium, welches sich aber kein volles Jahr hielt, opponirte hierauf Pitt im Unterhause, st. 1792, zur Bedeutungslosigkeit herabgesunken.
