Die Einwohner sind größtentheils Hindu, sodann Moplays (Mohammedaner, Nachkommen eingewanderter Araber), Europäer u. Juden. M. enthält mehre von der engl. Compagnie abhängige Königreiche (Calicut, Travancore, Cochin).
