Epirus

Epirus, (d.h. Festland, der Gegensatz zu den jonischen Inseln), griech. Landschaft, von Thessalien, Macedonien, Illyrien, Aetolien und Akarnanien begränzt, jetzt das Paschalik Janina; sehr gebirgig (von den Akrokeraunien und Zweigen des Pindus durchstrichen), mit den tiefen Flußthälern des Aous, Thyämis, Kocytus, Acheron etc., war trefflich angebaut und sehr stark bevölkert. Die Hauptstämme waren die Thesproter, Chaoner und Molosser, die alle wegen starker Mischung mit Illyriern kaum als Hellenen anerkannt wurden, obwohl das Orakel von Dodona im nördl. E. bei den Hellenen hohes Ansehen hatte. Den molossischen Fürsten gelang es ganz E. zu unterwerfen, welches unter Pyrrhus eine große Bedeutung gewann; nach dem Aussterben des Herrscherhauses theilte es sich in Republiken, wurde von Macedonien abhängig, 168 v. Chr. von den Römern gräßlich verwüstet und unterworfen. Vgl. Albanien.
