Clootz

Clootz, Joh. Baptist, Baron von, geb. 1755 bei Kleve, wurde in Paris erzogen und schwärmte für die Regeneration der Menschheit nach den Grundsätzen Diderots u. DʼAlamberts, nannte sich Anacharsis und den Sprecher der Menschheit. In der Revolutionszeit war er wüthender Jakobiner, stimmte als Conventsmitglied für den Tod des Königs, gebärdete sich als fanatischer Atheist, wurde jedoch mehr durch Scandal als durch einflußreiche Wirksamkeit bekannt. Er war ein Haupturheber des tollen Vernunftfestes und wurde deßwegen von Robespierre mit den andern Hebertisten den 23. März 1794 unter die Guillotine geliefert.
