Clairaut (frz. Kläroh), geb. zu Paris 1713, schon als Kind durch wunderbare mathematische Anlagen ausgezeichnet, entdeckte in seinem 18. Jahre 4 neue krumme Linien, wurde Mitglied der Akademie und Theilnehmer an der berühmten Grademessung in Lappland, begründete in einer Schrift nach jenen Messungen und physikalischen Gesetzen die Theorie von der Abplattung der Erde an den Polen, berechnete die Bahn des Kometen von 1756, verfaßte Handbücher der Geometrie und Algebra und verstand es in allen seinen Schriften einen schönen klaren Styl mit mathematischer Gründlichkeit zu vereinigen; er st. 1765.
