Castration

Castration, lat., Verschneidung, nennt man diejenige chirurgische Operation, wodurch bei lebenden Thieren oder Menschen die Hoden oder Eierstöcke entweder gänzlich entfernt oder zu ihrer Funktion untauglich gemacht werden (letzteres durch Zerquetschen der Hoden und Anstechen der Eierstöcke). Die C. weiblicher Individuen geschieht nur bei Hausthieren, Kühen, Schweinen etc. Castrirte, wenn die C. vor der Geschlechtsreife geschehen, erlangen nicht ihren natürlichen Geschlechtscharakter, sondern mehr oder weniger den entgegengesetzten, männliche Individuen den weiblichen, weibliche mehr den männlichen. Castrirte Knaben behalten stets die weibliche Stimme. Italien klebt die Schande an, auf diese Weise seine Theater mit männlichen Sopransängern versorgt zu haben und trotz der Verbote von vielen Päpsten dauerte dies bis in das 18. Jahrh. fort. Vergl. Eunuchen. Castrirte Pferde heißen Wallachen, Stiere Ochsen, Schafböcke Hammel, Hähne Kapaunen, Hühner Poularden etc.
