Benedict, Julius, berühmter Componist und Klavierspieler, geboren zu Stuttgart 1804, Sohn des Bankier B., Schüler Hummels und Carl Maria von Webers, 1823 Musikdirektor am Kärnthnerthortheater in Wien, 1825 am Theater San Carlo in Neapel, wo 1827 seine komische Oper »Giacinta ed Ernesto« zur Ausführung kam. Später reiste er als Pianist durch Italien, Deutschland, Frankreich, kam mit der Malibran wieder nach Neapel, begleitete seine frühere Stelle bis 1835 und schrieb die Opern »J Portoghesi a Goa« und »Un anno et un giorno«. 1836 wurde er Direktor der Opera buffa in London und schrieb die Opern »The Gipsys warning« und »The Assasins«. Von Amerika, wohin er 1850 Jenny Lind begleitet hatte, zurückgekehrt, lebt er wieder in London.
