Beatification

Beatification, d.h. Seligsprechung, ist die erste Stufe zur Kanonisation od. Heiligsprechung und besteht in der vorläufigen Erklärung des Papstes, daß eine verstorbene Person um ihrer Tugenden und Wunder willen für selig gehalten, öffentlich von den Bewohnern eines Ortes, einer Diöcese oder den Mitgliedern eines Ordens u.s.w. angerufen u. Gegenstand besonderer Verehrung werden dürfe. In den ersten Jahrhunderten sprachen die Bischöfe selig und heilig, seit 933 die Päpste meist mit den Concilien, 1170 gab Alexander III. die Grundlage des heutigen praktischen Rechtes hinsichtlich der B. und Kanonisation, welche seit 1634 ausdrückliches Reservatrecht des Papstes ist. Der dabei übliche Prozeß wird durch die congregatio rituum so strenge geführt, daß der schwierigste Jurist sich befriedigt erklären muß.
