Saladdin

Saladdin, eigentlich Salah-ed-din-Jussuf-Ebn-Ayub, geb. 1137, Sohn eines kurdischen Häuptlings, Feldherr des Sultans Nureddin von Aleppo, stürzte die Fatimiden in Aegypten, bemächtigte sich nach Nureddins Tod auch Syriens und verschaffte den Saracenen das Uebergewicht über die Kreuzfahrer. 1187 vernichtete er das Heer des Königs von Jerusalem, des Guido von Lusignan, bei Tiberias, nahm Jerusalem, vereitelte die Anstrengungen des sogen. 3. Kreuzzugs, indem er im Frieden den Christen nur den Küstenstrich von Jaffa bis Tyrus einräumte und ihnen die Wallfahrt nach Jerusalem öffnete. Er st. 1193 zu Damaskus, der edelste oriental. Herrscher seiner Zeit, der Stifter der Dynastie der Ayubiden (Eyubiden).
