Montrose, James Graham, geb. 1612 zu Edinburgh, focht, von König Karl I. zurückgewiesen, zuerst auf Seite der schott. Presbyterianer, kehrte jedoch bald zu den Royalisten zurück, sammelte einen Heerhaufen Hochländer, mit welchen er die Presbyterianer überall schlug n. die schott. Niederlande furchtbar verwüstete, mußte aber, als sich Karl I. den Schotten anvertraute, auf dessen Befehl die Waffen niederlegen u. entfernte sich nach Frankreich. Von hier ging er nach Deutschland, focht im Dienste des Kaisers im 30jährigen Kriege, kehrte 1650 nach Karls I. Hinrichtung nach Schottland zurück und erneuerte den Krieg; er wurde jedoch geschlagen. nach langem Umherirren gefangen, d. 21. Mai 1650 zu Edinburgh gehenkt u. dann geviertheilt. Karl II. gab seinen Nachkommen Güter und Aemter zurück und mehre derselben erscheinen in hohen Staatsämtern, ohne jedoch bisher eine wichtige politische Rolle gespielt zu haben.
