Gentleman (dschentlmän, vom frz. gentilhomme, Edelmann), in Englande in gesellschaftl. Begriff, umfaßt alle, die durch Vermögen eine unabhängige Stellung haben und ein entsprechendes Benehmen zeigen, also die höheren u. zum Theil auch die mittleren Klassen der Gesellschaft. Eine höhere geistige und äußerliche Bildung ist nothwendiges Erforderniß, sowie ein Charakter, der alles Niedrige von sich weist.
