Ephraim

Ephraim (der Fruchtbare), 2. Sohn Josephs, Enkel Jakobs, von diesem an Sohnes Statt angenommen, daher eines der 12 Stammhäupter der Juden. Das Stammgebiet lag ziemlich in der Mitte Palästinas, d. fruchtbare, wohlbewässerte Berg- und Thailand von Sichem. Der Stamm E. war zahlr., kräftig, kriegerisch, gegen Juda eifersüchtig und bewirkte den Abfall der 10 Stämme von Roboam.
