Club, engl., eigentlich Keule, sodann der Antheil, den einer an einer gesellschaftlichen Zeche bezahlt; im engl. Leben eine geschlossene Gesellschaft mit eigenem Locale, Wirthschaft, Bädern etc. unter eigener Verwaltung, durch Jahresbeiträge der Mitglieder unterhalten. Die engl. C.s sind zahllos; politische Parteigenossen bilden dergl., Schriftsteller u. Gelehrte, ehemalige Studiengenossen, Militärs etc. In der ersten Revolution nannten die Franzosen ihre politischen Vereine auch C.s (z.B. Jakobinerclub), diese entsprachen aber wenig den engl. Associationen oder Vereinen.
