Circumvallation, Umwallung; die Römer umwallten einen belagerten Platz, sowohl um denselben vollständig einzuschließen als um von dem Walle aus die Mauer mit den Belagerungsmaschinen zu brechen, sie umwallten aber zugleich ihr Lager, um ein zum Entsatz anrückendes Heer leichter zurückweisen zu können. Letzteres war auch in der neueren Kriegskunst bis 1746 gebräuchlich; die schnellere Kriegführung der neueren Zeit erlaubt deren Anlage nicht mehr.
