Bethlehem, kleine Stadt in Juda, 2 Stunden von Jerusalem, Geburtsort Davids und Christi. jetzt Beit el Ham. 200 Schritte in östl. Entfernung liegt ein Kloster mit einer Kirche, von der Kaiserin Helena über der Geburtsstätte des Erlösers erbaut. Die Geburtsgrotte befindet sich unter dem Hochaltare, ist 30' lang. 12' breit und 9' hoch, mit mehreren Seitenhöhlen. einst Aufenthalt u. Begräbnißstätte heiliger Anachoreten. Das Kloster ist mit Franziskanern besetzt, in 2 Abtheilungen halten sich jedoch Armenier und Griechen auf.
