Samos, Sisam, Insel im Archipel, eine der sog. Sporaden, von der jonischen Küste durch eine Meerenge getrennt, 81/2 QM. groß, gebirgig, erzeugt Südfrüchte, Wein u. Seide, hat 30000 E. S. wurde von Ioniern colonisirt, frühe eine Handels- und Seemacht und lieferte zu den altgriech. Künstlern u. Ge. lehrten ein namhaftes Contingent. Unter der osman. Herrschaft hatte S. viele Freiheiten und die Samioten trieben starke Rhederei; 1821 schlossen sie sich der griechischen Erhebung an, schlugen alle Angriffe der Türken zurück, wurden aber 1830 durch das Londoner Protokoll dem Sultan wieder zurückgegeben, dem sie sich erst 1835 unterwarfen, als ihnen fast dieselben Rechte wie den Hospodariaten zugestanden wurden. Seitdem hat sich die Rhederei sehr gehoben und die samische Flagge zeigt sich in allen Häfen der Levante und des schwarzen Meeres. Hauptstadt ist Megalochori, wichtiger jedoch der Hafenplatz Vathi.
