Galatia

Galatia, ein Theil Phrygiens mit den Städten Ancyra u. Pessinus, erhielt seinen Namen von den im 3. Jahrh. v. Chr. eingewanderten Galliern, deren Angriff zuerst Griechenland gegolten hatte. Die Verfassung dieses fremdartigen Staats in Asien war aristokratisch, mit Häuptlingen an der Spitze (Tetrarchen), unter denen Dejotarus um 64 v. Chr. durch Pompejus zum König erhoben wurde. Schon unter seinem Nachfolger Amyntas wurde G. röm. Provinz und in G. prima und G. secunda getheilt; wegen der aus Galliern u. Griechen gemischten Bevölkerung nannte man G. auch Gallograecia. Daß das Christenthum frühe Eingang fand, beweist der Brief des Apostels Paulus an die Galater.
