Demetrius Soter, d.h. der Retter, der 10. König Syriens, lebte seit 174 v. Chr. in Rom und ward nach dem Tode seines Vaters Seleukus Philopator daselbst gelassen, weil Antiochus Epiphanes sich der Herrschaft bemächtigte. Später gelangen ihm Flucht und durch blutige Mittel 162 Erwerbung des Thrones. Seine schweren Kriege mit den Juden hatten ihren Grund namentlich in Einflüsterungen des nach dem Hohepriesterthum lüsternen Alkimus und endeten durch einen ungünstigen Frieden mit dem Makkabäer Jonathan. Andere Kriege und vor allem die Laster des D. förderten das Aufkommen des Gegenkönigs Balas, gegen den er 151 eine Schlacht und fliehend in einem Moraste das Leben einbüßte. Sein ältester Sohn hieß:
