Curve

Curve, in der Geometrie eine krumme Linie, nach gewissen Grundsätzen gezogen (Kreis, Ellipse etc.). Man bestimmt sie durch eine Gleichung zweier veränderlichen Größen, welche die Entfernung der C. von 2 bestimmten geraden Linien angeben. Diese Entfernungen heißen Coordinaten, u. nach ihnen werden die C.n in Ordnungen eingetheilt, je nachdem die Coordinaten in der Potenz (zweite, dritte etc.) steigen. Eine andere Eintheilung ist die in algebraische oder transcendente (mechanische); bei den ersteren finden sich nur in der Gleichung die Potenzen der Coordinaten, bei letzteren enthält die Gleichung transcendente Größen (z.B. Logarithmen). Die Messung der C.n gehörte früher zu den schwierigsten Aufgaben der höheren Geometrie; seit Descartes sind die Gleichungsformeln zu der Lösung solcher Aufgaben sehr ausgebildet worden.
