Culmination

Culmination, in der Astronomie der Durchgang eines Gestirns durch den Meridian oder Mittagskreis des Beobachters; das Gestirn hat in diesem Augenblicke die größte Höhe, den höchsten Punkt seines Tagbogens (culmen arcus diurni) erreicht, »es culminirt«. Man unterscheidet obere und untere C., indem ein Gestirn bei seinem vollen Umlaufe zweimal durch den Meridian geht. Die untere C. ist aber nur bei Circumpolarsternen sichtbar, bei allen anderen ist sie unsichtbar. Die C.szeit eines Sterns (nach astronomischer Zeit) gibt zugleich die gerade Aufsteigung des Sterns an, nur in Zeit ausgedrückt.
